The huge German aircraft bomb — the size of a dustbin — was destroyed by weapon disposal experts in a controlled blast on Saturday.
In Northwest London at a construction site for luxury condos, workers came across a 500 lb bomb from the second world war. A large exclusion zone left 24 schools and daycares in the neighbouring area closed. Seventy five years later, this “gift” from the German ancestors caused the people and businesses to evacuate from the area, while they remove the bomb and make it safe. With many complexes in the area, you have to wonder how well the residents will sleep at night wondering what may lie beneath them.
I also have to wonder after the device was detonated what contaminants now linger in the soil for the generations ahead of us on that land. Hopefully it doesn’t become someone’s backyard garden.
